Aging in Place: An In-Law Suite Success Story
As more families explore options for aging parents, the concept of in-law suites has grown in popularity. These custom-built spaces allow older adults to maintain their independence while staying close to loved ones, offering a perfect balance of privacy and connection.
In this blog, we’ll share the story of Priscilla W., who moved into her in-law suite sixteen years ago. Through her experience, we’ll explore the benefits, challenges, and personal touches that made her suite the ideal forever home.
Meet Priscilla: A Journey to Comfort and Independence
Before moving into her in-law suite, Priscilla lived in Falmouth on Cape Cod with her husband until he passed away in 2004. After a few years of managing the upkeep of her home on her own, she began considering a change.
“I didn’t enjoy dealing with the yard and other maintenance issues,” Priscilla recalls, which led her to explore the idea of moving to a condo.
However, her daughter had a different suggestion: why not build an in-law suite? At the time, Priscilla was in her sixties and still very independent, but the idea of having her own space while being close to family was appealing.
“I loved the idea of living so close to family while having my own separate space,” she says. The notion of a forever home that required no future moves was another major draw.
Designing the Perfect In-Law Suite
With the decision made, Priscilla knew exactly what she wanted in her new living space. “I wanted an open concept living room, dining room, and full kitchen,” she explains.
The design had to accommodate a large dining table, perfect for family gatherings. A separate bedroom with an en-suite and a walk-in closet was also essential, along with her own washer and dryer. These features would ensure her independence while keeping her comfortable and connected.
To bring her vision to life, Priscilla hired an architect she had met while living on the Cape. Known for his excellent work and trusted by friends, he was the perfect fit for the job.
“I gave him my list of wants, needs, and must-have features, and he drew up a great plan that fit nicely with the look and feel of my daughter’s home,” she says.
Priscilla took her time during the planning phase, enjoying the process of selecting cabinets, flooring, and countertops. “I did it all on my own because it was exciting to choose the things I wanted without having to consider anyone else’s opinion,” she adds, noting that she remains very happy with her choices to this day.
Living the Dream: Daily Life in the In-Law Suite
Since moving into her in-law suite, Priscilla has enjoyed a level of independence and security that suits her perfectly. “The home is all my own,” she says.
With her own entrance and soundproofed front door, she can live as independently as she likes, while the proximity to her daughter’s family offers peace of mind.
“It’s been a joy to watch my grandchildren grow up, and I know we have a closer relationship because of our living arrangement.”
The suite’s design also included a shared deck, allowing Priscilla to spend time outdoors with her family while still enjoying her private space. Now in her 80s, she appreciates the safety and comfort of knowing her family is just on the other side of the door.
Aging in Place: Adapting Over Time
Over the years, as Priscilla’s needs have changed, her in-law suite has adapted with her.
“We’ve replaced the bedroom rug with LVL flooring to help me move around more easily, and we’ve added grab bars in the bathroom and shower,” she explains.
Most recently, a lift was installed outside her home to eliminate the need to climb stairs. “I’m a lot less mobile than I used to be, and my daughter was getting very nervous about me using the stairs,” she says.
The lift allows her to move safely between the driveway and her entrance, providing the accessibility she now requires.
For Priscilla, aging in place has always meant staying close to family while maintaining her independence.
“It’s very comforting to know I can stay in my comfortable, familiar surroundings with just a few modifications for added safety,” she says. These adjustments ensure that her suite continues to meet her needs as she grows older, allowing her to enjoy her home for years to come.
Lessons Learned: Tips for Others
Priscilla’s journey to creating her perfect in-law suite has taught her a few valuable lessons, which she’s eager to share with others considering a similar move.
“Find a good architect and maybe a designer too,” she advises. “Make sure you make a list of must-have features.” She also emphasizes the importance of planning for the future, suggesting that others include features like a walk-in shower, wide doorways, and ample lighting in their designs from the start.
Looking back, Priscilla only has one regret: not including a dishwasher in her kitchen. However, she’s quick to add that everything else is just the way she wanted it.
Priscilla’s experience living in her in-law suite highlights the many benefits of this type of arrangement. From the safety and security of having family close by to the joy of watching her grandchildren grow up, the in-law suite has provided her with a comfortable, independent lifestyle that she cherishes. For others considering a similar move, her story offers valuable insights and inspiration.
